VAL, our boat, our home
VAL is a Spray replica of Joshua Slocums "Spay" in which he became the first person to circumnavigate solo. Slocum's Spray was a wooden Yawl, VAL is a steel Ketch.
She was built by the previous owner in Pembrookshire, Wales, UK and named after his wife Valerie.
She is a beamy, heavy displacement with a full length keel. This makes her extremely comfortable during long passages. She rarely heals more than 15 degrees.
The aft deck steering position is ideal for sailing in good weather, steering from inside the wheel house gives protection from the weather. But most of the time her self steering allows the crew to relax and enjoy.
